Designer Revives Ford Thunderbird with Hardtop Roadster

The last time we saw the Thunderbird nameplate in Ford's lineup was in 2005, and from what we know, the Detroit automaker has no immediate plans to revive it. Nevertheless, this hasn't stopped Brazilian designer Eduardo Oliveira from coming up with a conceptual proposal for a new Ford Thunderbird model with a retractable hardtop.

Although a little rough on the edges, Eduardo's Thunderbird concept is interesting - we especially like the retro-futuristic take on the original 1954-1957 model's rear section. What do you think about the concept? Let us know in the comments section below.

Volkswagen Sharan

  • New people carrier gets twin sliding side doors and seven seats
  • Features fully flexible interior with a fold flat seating system
  • On sale in the UK late summer with prices from around £22,000

It has been a long time coming, but Volkswagen has finally unveiled a new version of its Sharan people-carrier.

The current Sharan has been on sale since 2000 but is looking distinctly out of date alongside newer and more stylish people carriers.

The newcomer retains the seven-seats but now features twin sliding side doors - a great family-friendly feature which will also be seen in the forthcoming Ford Grand C-MAX, due in late 2010.

Other features in the Sharan will include a fully flexible interior whereby the seats can be folded flat into the floor to create more luggage space.

Featuring the new Volkswagen family face which debuted on the Golf and Polo, the latest Sharan comes with a choice of four engines - two TSI petrols in 1.4-litre 150bhp and 2.0-litre 200bhp guises, and two TDI diesels: both 2.0-litre engines with either 140bhp or 170bhp.

Prices will announced nearer to the Sharan launch in the summer although expect it to start at around £22,000.

Mom-Mobile is Cleverly Disguised by its Hatchback Looks

In my eyes, the Mazda5 is the Swiss Army knife of cars. It’s compact, easy to maneuver and has a flexible interior that’s capable of hauling up to six people. Yay! This isn’t my first time in the Mazda5; I test drove the ’09 model and enjoyed it so much that I leapt at the chance to drive the 2010.

I test drove a 2010 Mazda5 Touring, which is a step down from the Grand Touring I drove in 2009, and a bit fancier than the base-level Sport trim. The 2010 Mazda5 had cloth seats instead of leather, and it didn’t have the awesome pop-up table with built-in cupholders that sits between the second-row captain’s chairs. I loved that table in the ’09 Mazda5; it was incredibly convenient and held my kids’ snacks, toys, hats and gloves. I missed it in the 2010 Touring model.

Are you ready for the biggest secret? The Mazda5 is fun to drive. It has a 153-horsepower four-cylinder engine that has plenty of pep. The Mazda5 is so compact and lightweight that the engine feels powerful enough even though it’s not loaded with horsepower.

This year, I was able to put Mazda5 to the test in wintery conditions. Admittedly, I was skeptical that it would handle well since it’s such a small car with front-wheel drive. Wrong! Even in snow, the Mazda5 has plenty of stopping power, and it easily took off from a snow-covered road with minimal slippage. I was stunned, so I kept pushing it, trying to get it to slide. No luck. For 2010, the Mazda5 gained standard stability control and traction control. Nice job, Mazda.
